Background:AIDS is one of the major global health issues. Since introduction of HAART since 1997 in Taiwan, the AIDS related death rate much decreased from 28.6 percent to 0.71 percent in 2012. However, it is a new challenge for long-term care of patients due to aging AIDS patients. The purpose of this study is to understand nursing home care attendant’s knowledge about AIDS, attitudes and willingness to take care of AIDS patients.
Purpose: This study adopted convenient sampling to survey nursing home care attendant knowledge to AIDS, and their attitudes and willingness to take care of AIDS patients in Taichung. We used descriptive statistics to analysis their knowledge, attitudes and willingness. Logistic regression was used to determinate the factors which influence the willingness of attendant to take care of AIDS patients.
Result:134 valid questionnaires survey in 35 nursing homes in Taichung found that willingness of attendant to care AIDS patients is 51.6%. In demographic characteristics parts: the unmarried and childless nurse attendant had higher willingness to care AIDS patients and achieve a statistically significant (p = 0.014; p = 0.015).The remaining terms of demographic characteristics are statistics insignificantly. Attendant who received AIDS education and training during their study period had higher willingness to care AIDS patients and reached statistically significant difference (p = 0.016; p = 0.010).There is no statistically difference between willingness to care AIDS patients and level of AIDS knowledge.
In questions of attitude on AIDS, the attendants believed they have the ability to take care of AIDS patients if they understand transmission and protective measures of AIDS (p = 0.015). In addition, the health care workers have no right to refuse HIV patients ,not afraid of AIDS, and willing to be assigned to care reached statistical basis as significant (p = 0.032; p = 0.026; p <0.001).
Conclusion:The current study examined the associated factors about willingness of nursing home care attendant to take care AIDS patients. We found that they had higher willingness to take care AIDS patients if they had more positive attitude for AIDS and can fully understand transmission route of HIV.
