摘要: | Continuous electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation for several hours leads to a gradual decrease of the analgesic effect, a phenomenon described as ''EA tolerance.'' Attempts were made to change the parameters and mode of stimulation in order to avoid, or at least postpone the development of EA tolerance. EA was administered via needles inserted into acupoints in both hind legs of a rat. Electrical stimulation was delivered from an EA stimulator in two modes: 1) simultaneously (S mode) to both legs and 2) alternating (A mode) between the two legs, for an intermittent duration of five seconds per leg. A similar degree of analgesic effect was obtained in ''S'' and ''A'' modes of stimulation (P>0.05). However, tolerance usually developed within five hours in S mode, and was postponed until 10 hours in A mode. It is therefore suggested to use the alternating mode rather than simultaneous mode for treating chronic pain patients with the benefit of postponing or avoiding EA tolerance without affecting the potency of the EA-induced analgesia. |
