To promote the physical fitness of students in Taiwan, the Ministry of Education has set up the norm-reference scales of normal students. Currently, the effects of promoting physical fitness in schools are obvious. However, there didn??t have deep investigations for physical fitness of the psychomotor dysfunction students. In this project, we are going to identify students with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). This special group is one of the highest populations of psychomotor dysfunctions in schools but researchers and practitioners seldom focus on it. The DCD children cannot be detected from the routine neurological examinations or chromosome structure examinations. However, DCD students without appropriate interventions may be significantly influenced not only on physical fitness and abilities but also on social behaviors. Reviewing the literature in Taiwan, there are no studies used the Movement Assessment Battery for Children (Movement ABC) to screen and examine the DCD children. In particular, physical fitness and motor performance of the DCD children have never been examined. The purpose of this study is to use the Movement ABC to screen students aged from 7 to 10 years old in order to identify children with DCD. In addition, motor ability and physical fitness of DCD children will be examined. In this study, we will collect about 800 students in primary schools, and the use Movement ABC examination tool to examine their motor abilities. This study will also collect about 40 DCD children through Movement ABC evaluations and exclude those children with neurological problems or chromosome structure problems. Then we will evaluate their physical fitness including Body Mass Index (BMI), flexibility, muscle endurance, power of lower extremities, and cardiopulmonary endurance. The data of physical fitness will compare with the norm-reference scales which developed by the Ministry of Education. The results of this project may help the development of simply screening methods for teachers to identify DCD students, the promotion of adapted physical education in schools, and the physical education programs for DCD students. Therefore, an objective method and scientific data can be established for school teachers to screen students with DCD and for the government to develop appropriate physical education policies and arrange adequate social and educational resources for students with DCD.
