; Literature is a vehicle to convey the Tao (the ultimate principle of the universe), and is used to pass on the knowledge of medicine.” Nan-jing, in which the essence of traditional Chinese medicine was enclosed, has been passed on for more than two thousand years. Its wording and sequence have been altered throughout the history, causing many misinterpretations and confusions. There were three goals in this study: First, research of the origin and interpretation of the meaning of Chinese characters were the main foci of this study. We tried to interpret Nan-jing based on the interpretation of the Oracle Bone Inscription, Pre-Qin Bronze Inscription, and Cloth Inscription. Second, our findings were expected to be beneficial for clinical applications today. Third, we hoped to establish a new method in coordinating interdisciplinary efforts in the studies of Chinese medical science. Thirty-one Issues of Difficulties regarding the topic of acupuncture in Nan-jing were included in this study, including those on Meridians (issues 8, 22 to 29 and 47), Points (issues 45, and 62 to 68), and Acupuncture (issues 12, and 69 to 81). The contents of these issues were given reinterpretation, and the sequence was rearranged for the convenience of discussion in this study. The meridian systems established in this framework of Chinese characters showed resemblance to their original meanings. Extra meridians benefited from this framework as well. A reasonable explanation was found for the contradictory viewpoints on the five points of each meridian in our lower limbs. Furthermore, a detailed description on the manipulations of acupuncture was also provided
