The flowers of Sophora japonica (SJ) is a Chinese medicine used to treat nasal haemorrhage, rectal bleeding and cerebral haemorrhage in clinical Chinese medicine. Rutin is a major polyphenolic constituent in SJ. It was believed that flavonoid glycosides are usually absorbed only after being hydrolyzed by enterobacterial enzymes to corresponding aglycones. Many studies have investigated the bioavailability of flavonoids after ingestion of quercetin - rich food and demonstrated that quercetin metabolites were present in blood circulation. However, the metabolic pharmacokinetics of flavonoids in SJ in human was still unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the urinary pharmacokinetics of rutin metabolites after oral administration of SJ decoction.?
