(何惠雅) Anoectochilus formosanus is an orchidaceous perennial herb distributed only in Taiwan and Okinawa (Japan) and has been used as a valued folk remedy for fever, pain, lung, liver diseases, and in underdeveloped children. Recently, this herbal drug was also used to cure hypertension, diabetes mellitus, consumption and nephritis, as well as osteopenia in ovariectomized rats. In this study, we investigated Kinsenoside that is an aliphatic glycoside (3-(R)-3-b-D-glucopyranosyloxybutanolide) isolated from A. formosanus. in vitro effect of proliferation and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity in MG-63 cultured human osteoblasts. We found that significantly increased proliferation and ALP activity. This effect was markedly reduced by PD 98059, an inhibitor of the extracellular regulated kinase (ERK) pathway, and by cycloheximide, inhibits protein synthesis. The results suggest that Kinsenoside can stimulate osteoblastic activity and may represent new pharmacological tools for the treatment of osteoporosis. Shih, C.C., Wu, Y.W., Lin, W.C., J.
