Abstract: The Mental Foramen Analysis by Dental CT Images in Taiwanese Population Ming-Gene Tu*, ** Jeng-Gwo Liu** Department of Dentistry, China Medical University Hospital* School of Dentistry, College of Medicine, China Medical University** Taichung, Taiwan Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the distance of mental foramen and the terminated part of mandibular canals using cone beam computed tomographic (CT) images. Materials and methods: Thirty-nine patients, aged 16-72 years, 20 female and 19 male, were included in Taiwan. The information data was captured by cone beam CT (PSR 9000N, Asahi Co., Japan) with 3D images. All the data were measured and calculated by ImplantMaxTM version 2.0 software (Saturn Co., Taiwan). The reference lines were drawn by a horizontal line passed across bilateral mental foramina and vertical line intersected from the interproximal contact of mandibular central incisors. The bilateral linear distances from the mental foramen to the mid-vertical line, the number and the direction of mental foramen exit were recorded. The minor diameter and the angulated canal distances to the exit of mental foramen were also measured. Results: The distance of mental foramen, from the center of mental foramen to the mid-vertical line the vertical, was 29.38±2.24 mm in the right side and 28.57±2.38 mm in the left side (P<0.05). Three types of the course from mental canals to mental foramen exits were found: posterior-upward exit (94.87%), anterior-upward exit (5.13%) and lateral-outward exit (2.56%). Only one case with double mental foramina was showed in the left side of the mandible (2.5%). The terminated mandibular canal depths in anterior-upward exit and posterior-upward exit cases were 7.71±1.85 mm in the right side and 7.62±1.89 mm in the left side. The minor diameter of terminated mandibular canals was 1.67±0.23 mm in the right side and 1.78±0.40 mm in the left side. Conclusions: The distance of mental foramen and the terminated
