    Title: The Effect of Acupressure with Massage on Prevention of Myopia Progression in Taiwan Schoolchildren

    Abstract: Background:The prevalence rate of myopia is high in Taiwan schoolchildren. School nurses were encouraged to decrease this situation. It is popular to use of acupressure improve myopia problem in Taiwan. However, few studies have shown evidence about the effects of acupressure on myopia. Objective:The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of acupressure with massage on prevention of myopia progression for Taiwan schoolchildren.Methods:The study applied an experimental pretest and posttest design. One hundred and thirty-four schoolchildren participated. Subjects were randomly assigned to an experimental group or a control group with class. Subjects in experimental group received health education regarding vision care and acupoint massage twice per day on school day for one semester. They pressed tenderly sixty-four press at each acupoints that included ST2(攢竹)、魚腰、BC3(四白)、EX2(太陽)及GB20(風池)。The notes of acupoint massage were told to subjects in experimental group. Subjects in the control group only received health education. The measures included visual acuity test with Snellen chart, the refraction test of eyeball and questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, X2 test and pair t-test were used for data analysis.Results:The results showed that no significant differences of the change of eye refraction and the change of vision with both eyes were noted between experimental group and control group. The feeling of eye discomfort was improved in experimental group, and it was significant difference with control group.Conclusions:The acupoint massage can improve the symptoms of discomfort of using eyes. The results of this study provide information for educating schoolchildren about vision care.
